The Song#7. Copacabana

РастровыйLet’s just pretend it’s been only a couple of days since my last post, not like a half of a year.

I love TV series! I’m actually planning to start a new section devoted to it. And start it not in half of a year, but quite soon.

What I was talking about? TV series! I know by heart most of the episodes from “F.R.I.E.N.D.S”. Recently I bought a pyjama with Rachel and Ross <3 Okay, it’s getting kind of too personal…

In one episode Rachel is a bridesmaid on her ex-fiance and ex-BFF’s wedding. Those who watched the episode might remember this pink embarrassing dress which made Rachel look like the medicine for a bad stomach.

And closer to the end of the episode, when Rachel decides to leave the wedding, she finally changes her mind, goes on with a big speech making fun of herself and the groom. Eventually, she starts singing a song which gets stuck in your mind once you hear it! The song is called “Copacabana”, and the original version is performed by Bary Manilow.

You know what’s the most interesting about that song? While the music makes you wanna dance and smile, the lyrics are so sooo sad.

The story of a showgirl who lost her mind because of the accidental death of her loved one is being put on such a happy melody. What a weird idea! And if you read the comments section on YouTube you find hundreds of comments about how nice this song seems for those who are not proficient in English and how weird and sad it is in reality. But what if this weird combination is what captures your attention and makes you think about this song again and again?

Anyways, Copacabana is probably my song of the month! Check it out!

P.S. I tried to learn how to play it on ukulele, but the chords seemed a bit too hard…But who knows, maybe one day..one day…

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star
Tony always tended bar
Across the crowded floor, they worked from 8 til 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?[Chorus:]
At the copa Copacabana
The hottest spot north of Havana
At the copa Copacabana
Music and passion were always the fashion
At the copa…. they fell in loveHis name was Rico
He wore a diamond
He was escorted to his chair, he saw Lola dancing there
And when she finished, he called her over
But Rico went a bit too far
Tony sailed across the bar
And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two
There was blood and a single gun shot
But just who shot who?[Chorus]At the copa… she lost her love

Her name is Lola, she was a showgirl
But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show
Now it’s a disco, but not for Lola
Still in the dress she used to wear
Faded feathers in her hair
She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind
She lost her youth and she lost her Tony
Now she’s lost her mind

[Chorus]

At the copa… don’t fall in love
Don’t fall in love
